“Digital Scholar” General FAQs

"Digital Scholar" is a hosted web platform powered by Reclaim Hosting  that that facilitates quick and easy deployment of digital scholarship projects.  Applications available in digitalscholar include Wordpress, Scalar, Omeka, mediawiki, Drupal, etc.,  in total, there are approximately 100 application options.
"Digital Scholar" is for faculty, staff, and students to create scholarship that cannot be done with a paper and pencil- Digital Scholarship.
Research questions and projects, embodied in a digital format, where meaning and expression cannot be otherwise replicated in print or traditional modes of scholarship. These projects involve the use of digital tools and methods to guide or to be used as a vehicle in carrying out research. Like traditional research, there are moments of not knowing - tools to achieve the end result may morph or pivot based on the current exploration. Some methods include: text mining and data visualization, while tools can include TEI, Bamboo, Directory of tools, and multispectral imaging. For more tools, see Dirt Directory.
"Digital Scholar" offers a standard landing page with one single sign on and a regular control panel interface with UR branding. Tools within "Digital Scholar" are one-click installs making it incredibly easy to start working within a tool of choice. UR’s peer institutions are using this hosting service (Reclaim Hosting) with very good feedback as it allows university stakeholders to build their digital projects without having to pay out of pocket for their own web hosting.

Account FAQs

All active faculty, staff and students affiliated with the University of Rochester who have active Net IDs.
All those interested must sign up for an account, complete an interest form, and assign a domain name.
  1. Click "Get Started" and log in with your UR netid and password and fill out the interest form.
  2. Once the interest form is filled out you will be contacted within 2 business days with follow up instructions.
  3. Once you receive the follow up instructions you will need to choose your domain name. Choose carefully because this cannot be changed later. Many people choose their net ID to create a domain such as https://mynetid.digitalscholar.rochester.edu but you should make sure it is general enough to make sense when you add sites which get appended to the end of the URL.

You may wish to secure your projects so that they are only available while on campus. The easiest way to do this is by using an .htaccess file. You can use multiple .htaccess files throughout your sites to control access to different parts of your site. Here are some good basic instructions.
